SOFTWARE.MAP

Every music visualizer and VJ software, mapped.

28 programs that put visuals behind music, plotted on the two axes that actually decide the choice: how much work before anything is on screen, and how far the tool goes once you learn it. We build one of these programs. It is on the map, scored by the same rules.

SOFT.01**

Max for Live devices

Visuals that live inside Ableton Live: on a track, saved with the set, automatable like a synth.

SOFT.02**

Preset players

The MilkDrop lineage and its cousins. Point them at audio and they go. The preset community does the design work.

SOFT.03**

VJ apps

Clip decks, mixers, and effect racks built for performing. You bring content, they give you a show surface.

SOFT.04**

Node environments

Patch-a-graph tools. The ceiling is whatever you can wire; the price is learning the graph.

SOFT.05**

Creative coding

Write the visuals as code. Total control, no guardrails, your frame loop.

SOFT.06**

Online render tools

Browser tools that render a visualizer video from an uploaded track, made for posting rather than performing.

How the scores work

Setup effort is the honest distance from install to a visual you would show someone: 1 means minutes, 10 means you are learning a programming environment. Visual ceiling is how far the tool goes in practiced hands: 10 means broadcast and arena work happens in it. The two numbers trade against each other almost everywhere, and the map exists because that trade is the real decision. A screensaver is a 1 and a 2. TouchDesigner is a 9 and a 10. The gap in the top left corner is the market Photism was built for.

Scores are ours, argued over, and updated when tools change. Prices are summarized in bands and change often; treat the linked official site as the source of truth.
