What it is
Synesthesia is built on a sharp idea: ship professional shader scenes as playable instruments. Each scene is a full-screen generative visual with a panel of meaningful controls, driven by real-time audio analysis, playable from MIDI. A scene marketplace and an SSF format for writing your own (GLSL underneath) keep the library growing.
Of everything in the VJ tier it is the closest cousin to Photism: both bet on curated scenes over blank canvases. The differences are placement and price. Synesthesia is a standalone app you route audio into, aimed at VJs running a dedicated rig; Photism lives on an Ableton track and costs a tenth as much.

Best for
VJs and streamers who want strong generative content tonight, with room to write shaders later, or Ableton users who would rather run a standalone app than an in-Live device.
Skip it if
Your visuals should live inside the Ableton set with per-track feeds and arrangement automation, or $199 is the whole visuals budget.
