What it is
Pure Data is Miller Puckette’s open source sibling to Max, and GEM (Graphics Environment for Multimedia) is its OpenGL visual layer. The patching model is the same: boxes, cords, signals anywhere. The price is zero, the platforms include Linux, and the community skews academic, experimental, and proudly duct-taped.
GEM’s rendering shows its age next to modern GPU tools, and the polish ceiling is lower than everything else in this tier. What survives is the freedom: a full audiovisual patching environment with no license, running on a decade-old laptop.
