What it is
Modul8 is one of the founding Mac VJ apps: a fixed, fast, layer-based mixer (think Photoshop layers that play video) that a whole generation of VJs learned on. Media in banks, ten layers, blend modes, effects, MIDI everywhere, and a directness that modular rivals still lack.
It is also visibly a veteran. Development has slowed for years while Resolume and VDMX6 kept moving, and the community treats it with the affection reserved for a classic instrument rather than a current flagship.
What it costs
Paid, macOS only. Verify current version support against your macOS release before buying; this is a purchase to research, and the state of maintenance is the thing to check.
Best for
Existing Modul8 owners with working rigs, and workflow-first VJs who value speed of hand over feature count.
