What it is
NestDrop takes the MilkDrop engine and wraps it in a performance cockpit. Presets become curated decks you fire on cue, switching can lock to detected beats, MIDI controllers map to the important moves, and the output broadcasts over Spout so it can land in Resolume, OBS, or a projector feed. High resolution, high frame rate, built by VJs for VJs.
This is the tool that turned a screensaver lineage into a working instrument. The visual DNA is still MilkDrop, which means the preset community’s decades of work is your content library.
What it costs
The base V2 is free. Paid editions (Midnight, Pro) add multi-controller MIDI, direct fullscreen output, deck mixing, and sprite layers. Windows only.
Best for
VJs who want reactive generative content as one layer in a bigger rig, and anyone performing where “the right preset at the right moment” is the craft.
Skip it if
You are on macOS, or you want visuals that belong to one track in a DAW session rather than the room’s audio feed. Inside Ableton that role is Photism’s.
