What it is
TouchDesigner is the deepest tool on the map. Everything is a node network: video, 3D, shaders, audio analysis, sensors, DMX, Python scripting, all wired into one real-time graph. The results ceiling does not exist in any practical sense. Arena tours, museum installations, and half the reactive visuals you have admired at festivals are TouchDesigner patches.
The cost is the learning curve, and it is real. Competence takes weeks, fluency takes years, and “I want visuals for my set” is buried under “first, learn the graph.” That gap between ambition and evening free time is precisely why simpler tools on the map exist.
What it costs
Free for non-commercial use at 1280x1280 output, which makes it the best free education in real-time graphics available. Commercial $600, Pro $2,200 per seat.
Best for
Anyone who wants visuals as a discipline: aspiring visual artists, installation designers, touring visual directors. The community, tutorials, and job market are unmatched.
Skip it if
You want your music visualized this week. Photism exists because the TouchDesigner path, for a producer, means months of patching before the first show. Sixty seconds versus a semester is the honest comparison, and the ceiling difference is honest too.
