What it is
vvvv (say “vee four”) is a visual programming environment with a distinct culture: born in German media-art studios, it powered a huge share of European installation and stage work through the 2000s and 2010s. The modern incarnation, vvvv gamma, compiles patches to .NET code, which gives it a performance profile closer to written software than interpreted graphs.
The aesthetic tradition leans precise and architectural: kinetic typography, data-driven installations, LED facades. Where TouchDesigner’s community is global and tutorial-rich, vvvv’s is smaller, deeper, and studio-centered.
What it costs
Free for non-commercial use; commercial licenses priced per developer. Windows only.
Best for
Studios and artists in the installation world, especially where a patch must run for months unattended, and developers who want patching with real compilation underneath.
Skip it if
You need macOS, or you want the largest pool of learning material and hireable collaborators, which TouchDesigner owns.
