How to make a chrome logo for album art and merch

Chrome lettering is everywhere in music design: mixtape covers, tour merch, streaming banners, stage screens. It reads as loud and expensive at any size. You can get a chrome version of your own logo in a few minutes with the 3D logo generator, and it helps to know why chrome looks the way it does, because the same few details decide whether it looks real.

Rounded edges sweep across the bright parts of the studio, which is where chrome gets its streaks.

Why chrome looks like chrome

Chrome is a mirror. It has almost no color of its own, so everything you see on it is a reflection of what surrounds it. That gives three rules:

  1. It needs something to reflect. A chrome logo in an empty black room renders black. The classic look comes from a bright sky over a darker ground, which paints a horizon line across the metal.
  2. Flat faces show one reflection. The front of a flat logo reflects a single spot of the room, so it reads as an even sheet of silver. That is correct, and it is why depth and bevels matter.
  3. Edges carry the shine. Bevelled edges turn through many angles at once, so they sweep across the bright parts of the room and catch the streaks that make chrome sparkle.

The generator renders every finish in a studio built for this: a bright sky and darker floor for the horizon, strip lights at the sides for the edge streaks, and a touch of blue from the Photism palette in the reflections.

  1. Drop your logo on the 3D logo generator. A PNG with a transparent background or an SVG gives the cleanest edges.
  2. Pick Chrome. It is the first finish and the default.
  3. Choose Rounded edges. Round bevels roll the light smoothly across every letter. Chamfer gives a sharper, more graphic chrome with a single bright line along each edge.
  4. Push the edge size up. Chrome loves a big bevel. The slider stops where your thinnest stroke would lose its shape.
  5. Add some depth. A third of the way along is plenty for most wordmarks. More depth shows off the reflective sides when the logo turns.
  6. Drag it to an angle you like and check the highlights, then get the files.

Black chrome, gold and tinted chrome

Black chrome is the same mirror with a dark tint, so the horizon and edge streaks stay while the overall read turns heavy and moody. It sits well on bright artwork, where plain chrome can wash out.

Gold, straight from the finish picker.

Gold is a warm tinted metal with slightly softer reflections. For anything in between, use the color picker: tinting chrome keeps the reflections and shifts their color, which is how you get a blue or rose chrome that matches a cover.

Holo adds a thin-film shimmer that shifts color as the logo turns.

Chrome on album art and merch

The download includes three transparent PNG renders, from the front and from each side, about 2400 pixels wide and cropped to the logo. Drop one straight onto your cover in Photoshop, Canva or Procreate. A soft shadow under the logo and a slight tilt from the side renders usually sell it better than a dead-on front view.

For merch printers, send the front render at full size along with the clean SVG that also comes in the zip, so they have both the chrome look and a vector outline for screen print separations.

Chrome that moves with the music

A still chrome logo looks good. A spinning one on a screen behind the artist looks better. Drop the GLB from the zip onto Photism and its limitless 3d scene puts the logo on a turntable. In form mode the chrome control pulls it toward palette chrome and melt ripples the surface with the bass. See how to put your logo in your music visuals.

Questions

What makes a logo look like chrome?

Chrome is a mirror, so what you see is its surroundings. A believable chrome logo reflects a bright sky over a darker ground, which puts a horizon line across it, and has bevelled edges that catch bright streaks of light.

Can I make black or colored chrome?

Yes. The generator has a black chrome finish, and the color picker tints any chrome, so blue, pink or gold-leaf chrome takes one click.

What size are the chrome renders?

Three transparent PNGs, from the front and both sides, about 2400 pixels wide and cropped to the logo, ready to place over album art in Photoshop, Canva or Procreate.

Can I use the chrome logo in video?

Yes. The GLB keeps the chrome finish and opens in Blender and other 3D apps for animation, and Photism spins it live to your music in the limitless 3d scene.
