Projection mapping

Also called: video mapping

Warping projected video to fit real objects and architecture, so surfaces appear to move, break, or glow.

Projection mapping aligns imagery to geometry: corners of the content pinned to corners of the building, masks tracing the sculpture, so light lands exactly on the intended surfaces and the object itself seems animated.

The workflow is measurement, warping, and masking, handled in tools from Resolume Arena to MadMapper to full media servers. Complex rigs add multiple projectors with edge blending and careful throw planning.

For music shows, mapping turned the venue into the canvas: DJ booths, stage sets, and cathedral facades all carry content now. It rewards content authored for the surface, which is why mapped shows are usually designed, not improvised.
