How to map Serum, Vital or any plugin to hand gestures in Ableton

2026-10-17

Drop Serum on a track, click LIST in Tactism, and you may find almost nothing to pick. Press MAP and click a knob in Serum’s window, and nothing lands. Nothing is broken. Live only shares a plugin’s knobs with other devices once they are part of its Live-side parameter list, and clicks inside the plugin’s own window happen where Live cannot see them.

There are two good ways in. Both work for Serum, Vital, Pigments, and any other VST or AU.

Option 1: Configure the knobs you play

This is the quick route when you want a handful of controls.

  1. In Live, expand the plugin device so its title bar shows.
  2. Click Configure in the title bar.
  3. Open the plugin’s window and touch each knob you want, such as Serum’s filter cutoff and a wavetable position. Each one appears as a slider in the Live-side panel.
  4. Click Configure again to leave the mode.

Those parameters are now real to Live. In Tactism, LIST shows them under the plugin, and MAP catches a drag on their Live-side sliders. Clicks inside the plugin’s own window still will not register, so drag the slider in Live’s device panel.

Configured parameters save with the set, so you do this once per project or once in a preset rack you reuse.

Option 2: Put the plugin in a rack and map macros

This is the better route when one gesture should move several things inside the plugin together.

  1. Select the plugin and press Cmd+G to group it into a rack.
  2. Click Map on the rack, then click the plugin parameters you want in its Live-side panel and assign them to macros. One macro can reach several parameters, each with its own range. If a knob you want is missing from the panel, add it with Configure first.
  3. Turn the rack’s Map mode off before you use Tactism’s MAP, so the two mapping modes never talk over each other.
  4. In Tactism, map a gesture to the macro with LIST or MAP.

Macros are native Live dials, so LIST and MAP always see them. A single pinch on a macro that closes the filter, lifts the resonance and adds drive feels far bigger than any one knob.

Shape it after

Whichever route you take, open SHAPE on the mapped row to tune it. EXP suits filter cutoffs. Narrow min / max for parameters like detune where the full range is too much. A fist mapped to a rack macro with two values makes a clean on and off switch for a whole effect chain.

Questions

Why does Serum only show a couple of parameters in LIST?

Live only exposes a plugin's parameters to other devices once they are in its Live-side parameter list. A fresh plugin shows few or none. Use Configure or a rack to add the ones you want.

Why does MAP not catch clicks inside the Serum window?

Clicks inside a plugin's own window are invisible to Live. Once a parameter is configured, drag its Live-side slider instead, and MAP catches it.

Configure or rack macros, which is better?

Configure is quicker for a few knobs. A rack is better when one gesture should move several plugin parameters together, since one macro can reach many of them.

Does this work with Audio Unit plugins?

Yes. Configure and rack macros work the same for VST and AU plugins in Live.
