LED wall

Also called: LED screen

A display built from LED panels, the dominant large-format stage canvas, defined by its pixel pitch and processor.

LED walls are stages’ brightest canvas: modular panels tiled into any shape, emitting rather than reflecting light, so they hold color in full stage wash where projection dies. Pixel pitch, the distance between LEDs in millimeters, sets viewing distance and price: 2.6 mm reads clean up close, coarse outdoor pitches want meters of distance.

Every wall terminates in a processor that maps input video onto the panel grid. The wall’s native resolution is whatever the tiling adds up to, frequently nonstandard, and content should be built for it.

For visuals artists the operational questions are three: pitch, processor input resolution, and brightness headroom. Answers in hand before the gig beat discoveries during it.
