Bow the edge of a metal plate dusted with sand and the sand leaps away from the vibrating regions, gathering along the still lines, the nodes, into symmetrical geometric figures. Each frequency owns a pattern: raise the pitch and the figure reorganizes into something more intricate. Ernst Chladni demonstrated this in 1787 and toured Europe with it, sound made visible two centuries before screens, and the sand figures still carry his name.
The modern word cymatics comes from Hans Jenny, whose 1960s photographs of vibrating fluids, powders, and droplets turned the phenomenon into an aesthetic. His images, standing-wave mandalas in water and pulsing droplets, remain the visual reference for the entire genre, and clips of water cornstarch dancing on subwoofers carry the tradition on.
The physics is standing waves: a driven surface supports certain vibration modes, and matter migrates to where the motion cancels. It is the same mathematics that gives a drumhead its modes and a room its resonances, drawn in sand. Cymatics sits beside the Lissajous curve and the oscilloscope in the small family of visuals that are not interpretations of sound but direct portraits of it, which is why the look reads as honest in a way designed graphics have to earn.
